Hi Folks,
Last night was a practical night where members brought along items that were difficult to photograph. Brian gave us a short talk on some of the items and the problems they may create in getting the images right. Brian said some of the most difficult items to photograph are mirrors, silver and ball bearings with the unwanted reflections they can produce.
Various lighting was available along with white and black cards for reflecting the light.
There was a silver tea service to photograph but we needed to think about the shots to avoid getting ourselves and the camera reflections on the images. We had to look for different angles and perhaps even go in close to photograph various parts of the set or even a lid.
There was a crystal glass which would be lit with a candle inside and using black cards it would help improve the picture
We also had a bubble machine and Brian suggested various shutter speeds to capture the bubbles in different ways
Tea and biscuits were available all evening.
No that was not part of the set up, my biscuit was a bit blurred but tasted ok lol
so after the talk the lighting was lowered in the hall and we had a chance to photograph everything available, members were on hand to help.
This silver ring and the candle were quite difficult but I managed to get the candle flame ‘blowing in the wind’ to the left of the candle lol
Brian had a canon camera setup in front of some lighting and using various boards one can reflect the light back onto the front of the camera

The tea set under different lighting
Just behind in the next bay there was a mirror and a fortune teller’s crystal ball and looking into it I told Carol that it was predicted that she would win the next competition. I think I may have been fibbing as my image was appearing in the ball lol
Next I tried the bubble machine using a slow shutter speed
I tried to get the shutter speed really low but the camera was not having it as I had forgotten that I had locked my ISO at 5000 earlier in the day, so just a senior moment for me there
Then I used a higher shutter speed
A very sociable evening was had by all.
Thank you to Brian for setting things up and giving us the talk
Next week is
How I made this winning image
Tuesday April 23, 2019 from 20:15 to 22:15
A night where members will be asked to step up and talk through the shooting and processing of some of the top scoring images seen in this year’s club competitions.
Well I might have seen it in the crystal ball but it is a pity as I have not won the 5th round of the competition yet to give a talk on it lol
