Hi Folks,
Last night was the first round of the league challenge cup with the theme of ‘door’ and the ‘open’ round. Our judge for the evening was Cat Humphries from (Croxley CC).
There was a high number of entries again of 73 images
Cat first asked for a run through of all the images for the theme of ‘Door’ where 37 images were entered
The first to be held back was titled
‘Through the back door’ by Barry Coxon
A lot of work has gone into this one and very creative, said Cat. The back door is through the computer and the sky behind works well. The author has been very careful with composition in how everything has been arranged, even to the mouse which is positioned to stop the eye searching for detail on the sheet.
The next to be held back was titled
‘Open the latch’ by Kathy Chantler
A lovely spider’s web on the latch showing it has not been open for sometime. Shown in black and white which was the right choice for this, as it adds mystery to the image. The right level of darkness on the brickwork. The light of the rear window draws one’s eyes into the dark room.
The next to be held back was titled
‘The locked door’ by Chenxi Ni
A great sense of atmosphere with the shadows with a soft feel to this image
The next to be held back was titled
‘Through the shades of grey’ by John Timbrell
Not a door but more an archway said Cat. The author has capture the light shining on the wall. The archway is portraying mystery as to what is beyond it. This is almost a gallery type picture.
The next to held back was titled
‘Seen better days’ by Mike Perry
The monochrome works well, said Cat. Maybe the black and white was selected because the signs over the door would have been distracting. There is a nice line of cobbles at the bottom of the picture and good detail in the door.
The last to be held back was titled
‘Door B the stage’ by John Timbrell
A graphical type image with the rail leading the eyes towards the door. Everything is very dark or light. Cat noticed a plug below the letter ‘B’ which perhaps could be removed but thought the two switches were ok
Cat then had six held back images to give marks to and they were as follows,
Door B the stage by John Timbrell scored 19 points
Open the latch by Kathy Chantler scored 19 points
Seen better days by Mike Perry scored 19 points
The locked door by Chenxi Ni scored 20 points
Through the back door by Barry Coxon scored 20 points
Through the shades of grey by John Timbrell scored 20 points (Judge’s choice)
Coffee time
In the second half it was the open round with 36 entries and again Cat asked for a run through of all images
the first to be held back was titled
‘Coloured heron stalking it’s next meal’ by Nick Long
I love the ripple pool said Cat. Perfectly framed and enjoying the detail in the dark parts. There is just a light in the heron’s eye to prove it is alive.
The next to be held back was titled
‘Wells Abbey’ by Derek Green
Cat was enjoying the people and lines of the abbey. It is unusual to have subjects in an architecture image. The couple look natural and not aware of the author and they do not have other people behind them to distract.
The next to be held back was titled
‘Chase’ by Chenxi Ni
The wet droplets are sharp on a dark background. Cat thanked the author for added an important key line around the images.
The next to be held back was titled
‘Cracked Actress’ by Nick Bennett
The subject has been set up for the author, the picture is sharp and has a lovely golden background. Nicely darken in the corners to make the subject stand out.
The next to be held back was titled
‘Fine art tattoos’ by Steve Beckett
Fine art indeed, said Cat. The hose dress works well for you and the textures are lovely.
The last to be held back was titled
‘Remember I am always watching you’ by Brian Worley
The lighting works well for the author and his eyes are very sharp and positioned well.
So there were 6 held back for Cat to give her marks as follows,
Remember I am always watching you by Brian Worley scored 19 points
Coloured heron stalking it’s next meal by Nick Long scored 19 points
Wells Abbey by Derek Green scored 19 points
Chase by Chenxi N scored 20 points
Cracked Actress by Nick Bennett scored 20 points
Fine art tattoos by Steve Beckett scored 20 points ( Judge’s choice)
So after an exciting first round Chenxi is in the lead with a maximum 40 points followed closely with an impressive 38 is Barry Coxon.
Brian Worley moves into 3rd place with 37 points whilst Chris Andrews and Kathy Chantler share 4th place with 36 points.
John Timbrell takes maximum points in the theme of ‘door’ with the judge’s choice
and Steve Beckett takes the open round but did not enter the ‘door’ theme.
So all to play for in the next round with the theme of ‘Go’
Next week is
