COMPETITION: Club Challenge #4
Theme: ABSTRACT + OPEN section Week 13
Attendees 28
Last night was round four in the League competitions and the evening was split into two sections. Section one was Abstract theme with thirty-six images.
The judge was Damon Guy from High Wycombe club.
Damon was very succinct with his critique and deeply knowledgeable on the Abstract medium. In each image he looked for the message that the author was trying to get across and what emotions the image made him feel. He talked of Abstracts needing balance both in colour mix and pattern, he described images having a good tonal hue, ‘Washing up Water’ and with ‘Spiro on Acid’ a “beautiful flow and balance continuity.” Some images he said were a representation of underlying reality, such as Stylized grapes.
He said some images did not need a title as the viewer can then appreciate it for what he feels about it. Many different interpretations of Abstract had been presented including, Ebony and Ivory good negative space and a profile image of a face, Ferns, Light Painting, Intentional Camera movement, Posturizing, Lights in Crystal, Light trails, a Montage influenced by the Tate Gallery and a Tree reflection in a window at Waddesdon, Abstract Vents and Swan Lake. Finally, several images were held back receiving nineteen and twenty points.
They were:
Twixt Barley and Wheat 19 Peter Carter
Whisk 19 Chenxi Ni
Young Surfer dragging his Board. 19 Chenx Ni
Spiro on Acid 20 Chris Andrews (Favourite)
Stylized Grapes 20 David Gibbs.
The Open Round had many lovely images which featured humour, Smoke Trails, ‘In Aladdin’s Cave’ ‘Triplets” three adorable mice, “Beyond the Stubble’ a field and derelict farmhouse with wonderful light and mist, ‘Coloured pencils’, ‘View from my Window’ a lovely Landscape, A rather over packed barge, “Packed up and ready to go and ‘Sunrise at Weston Turville Reservoir’ which featured wonderful colours and a very serene scene of early morning. As usual the standard was remarkably good and all participants had risen to the challenge. The evening was very interesting and entertaining.
Finally, the four images were held back and were scored as follows:
Oscar 19 Barry Coxon.
Splash 19 Chenxi Ni
Golden Falls 20 Chris Andrews
Reservoir Dawn Ice Age 20 Peter Carter. (Favourite)
