26th November 2024
On Tuesday we saw the welcome return of the Landscape photographer Simon Turnbull. Simon was telling us ‘how to be original’ with our photography.
Simon ‘s presentation took us through a journey of ways to make our photography truly our own with the aid of inspiration from other artists and photographers. As Simon asked us” Is Originality an Illusion?” As he pointed out many great master’s of the art world were influenced by other artists even Picasso.
So, our task is to use others work to inspire us but not copy. Simon shared with some of his inspiration comes from Cinema, Music, social media, Camera Clubs, and other photographers.
Photographers such as Paul Sander’s, Alister Benn and Glenys Garnett and he showed us examples of their work and explained he enjoyed the minimalist work by Sanders, the geometric work of Benn, and the soft tones and colours of Glenys Garnett.
Simon presented his own wonderful images talking in detail about why he had chosen a certain composition, the way he had worked to make the image, software techniques used to achieve textures and space, and he explained what he had wanted to achieve. He spoke to us about visualisation and taking time to see the image and exploring the focal point from different angles.
After the break Simon offered practical advice to us to help with our photography, such as learn all about your camera settings at home so that you can concentrate on creativity when out taking your image. Prepare your kit and camera before going out on a shoot and be brave with ideas that seem a bit wacky you may love them, and they may work very well.
Simon finished his presentation encouraging us to try small projects and have fun.
He also spoke of the benefits of being out in the environment and its benefit to body and mental health.
The evening was very enjoyable as well as inspiring and full of helpful tips on encouraging creativity and finding our own style.
ImageZ members really enjoyed the talk and seeing Simon’s images and panels.

It sounds like a good evening and a good blog explaining it Carol.
Thank you for a very detailed blog Carol. It was a great evening and I have taken away lots of ideas. I particularly like the small project idea. Perhaps this is something we could start doing at the club!
Excellent blog Carol, you took on board all Simon said. An inspirational evening with some excellent tips.
Sorry I missed it. Thanks Carol.
