ImageZ Camera Club last night were incredibly lucky to have a talk from Paul Wilkingson an outstanding portrait photographer.
Paul began his presentation by talking of his love of photography since childhood. He explained that while we learn about our cameras and acquire technical and post processing skills, there is an intuition and individual style in the way we produce in our work that stays with us.
Paul went on to explain that he likes to talk to his subjects to get a feel for the person they are and to relax them and then he gets inspiration for the photograph he wants to produce.
In one of his photographs of a family he asked the teenage children to choose how and where they wanted to sit after he had asked
The mother a lady he knew well sat centrally in the photograph as she had a South American background and culturally often the mother is a matrical figure the family centre around.
During Pauls presentation he shared portraits he had taken of politicians, sports people, scientists, Nobel prize winners, an American President and even members of the Royal Family.
Paul ‘s images are mainly monochrome and certainly very striking containing a magic that is difficult to describe. Like the most inspiring photographers he bought the personality of his subjects out to the viewing audience.
Paul really likes to print and had bought along his latest book and many wonderful of prints.
He has an eye for capturing an interesting environment and light. He is an inspiring man and his presentation was full of energy, spontaneity, and humour.
Everyone thoroughly enjoyed his anecdotes and the time he and his wife spent with us generously chatting and answering questions.
Paul has supplied a few images from his talk for the blog.
