Addicted to Iceland
We had a presentation on Tuesday by Sophie Carr a well-known Landscape photographer.
Sophie began by telling us about her journey into photography and her love for travel especially her trips to Iceland, which in her words she has ‘become addicted to.’

Colourful River Estuary Southern Iceland by Sophie Carr
Sophie is enchanted by the landscape and has spent many holidays there getting amazing photographs of Waterfalls, Volcanoes, Ice Bergs, Waves, Basalt Columns and the Northern lights. Recently she has bought a drone which has given another dimension to her photography as she is able to give the audience a bird’s eye view of wonderful abstract patterns of rivers winding through rocks with magnificent turquoise colours forming strange patterns across the terrain. One of her favourite pictures she calls the Octopus which features a glacier with small ice tributaries running down from it like the tentacles of an Octopus. Also, lava bursting from a Volcano and glowing its way through rocks, like a dark fiery river.

Icebergs in the waves on Jökulsárlón beach, in south-east Iceland. They float down from the nearby river, after calving from the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier. Each day the river and tide bring in new icebergs, which then get smashed by the waves against the beach. Photo by Sophie Carr
Her presentation was split into various geological features, for example Icebergs, Volcanoes, Waves, Seas, and Storms. Sophie spoke passionately about her love for the strength of waves, and the heat and smell of the volcano’s. Her love of the landscape and her passion came across very strongly and was very inspirational and interesting. She told us of various challenges she faced, of being marooned in a small hut in a massive storm for days and driving on ice covered roads. Travelling alone she said “takes guts” She explained that the weather could be extremely treacherous and anyone going to Iceland to photograph should be aware and prepared for this.
Throughout her slides she spoke of the location and her technique on every image, giving details of shutter speed and ISO. Her images are spectacular with glorious lighting, amazing colours, and spectacular scenes. She has a variety of images are including Landscapes, Abstract and Macro. She also shared the wildlife she had met like puffins and fox cubs.
Sophie’s presentation and photography was excellent and enjoyed very much by all.
Thank you to Sophie.
