7th July 2026
It was the end of a hot summer’s day when a select group of club members met up for a walk on Watlington Hill. The plan was to find some natural subjects to photograph and maybe catch the sunset at the end of the evening. Our guide was club member Cathy Rose, a specialist in Chiltern’s natural history and nature in many of its forms.
Setting off from the car park along the top of the hill we’d soon seen a number of butterflies, various chalky grassland native plants and heard the screech of the red kites overhead. As we walked further along the top a buzzard was seen, and then we arrived at the top of the chalk spire that is carved in to the Watlington side of the hill. This proved to be a good vantage point for red kites – who were clearly eye up the photographers lying down as a possible next meal 🙂
With the sun setting we headed back to the car park, before descending down to the Spire and Spoke pub for a well deserved drink.
Here’s a selection of our photos from the evening

This was a fantastic evening learning about Watlington hill and the refreshing drink at the pub topped the evening. Thank you for a wonderful evening.
It was a lovely evening, thank you for organising Cathy, you have a wealth of knowledge about the hill, nature and I learnt a lot. All in all, a great summer event!
Really lovely images here, it sounds a lovely evening
