Club Challenge Competition #2
The second of our club challenge rounds had the theme of Vintage plus the usual Open section. Our judge for the evening was Alan Copthorne who had travelled a long distance to be with us. Alan began with the Vintage images; this had proved a difficult theme for members, although there was the usual wide interpretation and an impressive range of creativity; it’s fair to say that our judge also found some images challenging to understand and score. Alan’s critiques were always thorough, giving time for everyone to listen and consider their own opinions. Common points discussed by the judge were placing the subject at an appropriate position in the frame, lighting used in both quality and directionality as well as giving adequate space around a subject.
This part of the evening concluded with Mike Ward awarded 19 points for an Elderly Morris car, another 19 points for Kes Ward of a spectacular old Merc and Barry Coxon taking the top spot with 20 points, and Judge’s Choice, for his image of a vintage Singer sewing machine.
After a much-needed cup of tea, we moved on to the Open section of the competition. Here, many images left our poor judge wondering what was going on and gave him a challenge with scoring. Again, lighting within an image was mentioned on several occasions, as well as advice to take care with cropping to leave adequate space near an edge. Subject matter varied widely, including trains – popular with our judge – sunsets, landscapes and wildlife.
The top scorers were Sam Knight on 19 points with his beautiful dog, Benson; Kuldip Chater also with 19 points for a Blue building and sky; but the top accolade of 20 points and Judge’s Choice went to Neil Tingle for a well seen and presented Car Park Full.
Next week we have our It’s a Knockout competition starting with a large number of member images eventually getting down to ONE through a gradual process of member voting – one week ahead of our Christmas Party, where Seasonal Jumpers and Santa Hats are compulsory!
