Simon Turnbull’s presentation gave us an excellent insight into photographing the treasures of the woodlands.
Simon took us through the planning, visualization, photographing and post processing procedures, showing his amazing images to support his talk.
During the first half of Simon’s presentation, he shared his images explaining where they were taken, what he liked about them, and he talked to us about the stories he saw in some of his photographs.
Simon advised that when walking through woodland to be very observant looking upwards and downwards onto the woodland floor as well as around. He said there are many hidden treasures that we will miss if we don’t do this. He suggested researching areas, and really getting to know them.
He uses weather apps, and always checks his kit the night before, He suggested that we are with our flexible with our expectations as many times things might not work out as we had planned. He said “ take time to really look at the subject perhaps finding a better angle if stepping right or left”.
Simon gave these tips to us all. Use of a tripod is best not only to ensure a sharp image but also as it also helps to slow the photographer down. Natural elements can help to give atmosphere such as fog, snow, and ice. Look out for interesting shapes and beautiful structures. Make sure your image isn’t too busy or cluttered.
Simon suggested using live mode to see the proposed image and really look at it to make sure it’s at the standard you want it to be before pressing the shutter.
During the second half of the evening Simon shared techniques, he uses during post processing, but he said he uses it minimally. He explained that for him the chance to be surrounded by beauty and often a quiet space is good for his wellbeing. He always cares for nature never removing branches or damaging woodland.
The talk was very inspiring and got many of us looking forward to getting out into the woods and forests to create some lovely woodland images. Thanks to Simon for an excellent presentation.
