We spent a most enjoyable evening on Tuesday learning about portrait lighting using four different setups:-
- Informal portrait
- Formal portrait
- Environmental portrait
- Dramatic single light portrait
All members were split into four groups and spent time taking photos of volunteer models which were people from our groups.
Each setup had a lead person who facilitated, suggesting settings and explaining the benefits of each set of lights and how to use them. We moved to each different where we spent about twenty minutes moving to different positions and asking the model to move to see how lighting combination changed. Some of the setups used constant LED lights, others required a trigger to be used to work with the studio flash lighting.
The evening was very productive, with lots of interaction between the group member as we spent time photographing, sharing and discussing our images.
Thank you to Martin, Chris, Caroline and Brian who worked hard to bring in equipment, set it up, as well as taking the lead in supporting the groups.
Here’s a number of portraits created by club members as they tried portrait photography on the different setups.

A really enjoyable evening with lots to learn on lighting and some good finished portraits. Lots of comments from members on how much they had enjoyed the evening.
Great to see the results here. I hope everyone got a bit of extra appetite to have a go themselves in their own time.
Some really nice images taken. Looks as if it was a very good evening.
This was a great evening
Thank you for organising it
The amount of people who came into the kitchen and said “This isn’t really my thing, but I really enjoyed it!” So I’d say it was a very successful evening. Well done and thank you for all your hard work.
One of the best nights and some fantastic results.
