With two of the four sessions of the lighting workshop now completed it’s definitely time to determine the theme or concept for the final session on 28/February. It’s been suggested to have some challenge or concept for the last session, and this might take some planning. It’s also possible to have several ideas or concepts to work to or recap some existing themes.
Current suggestions…
- Shoot a CD/Album cover
- Shoot a commercial / advertising piece – theme needed
If you like these or have other ideas put a mention in the comments on this post. (the comment box is a bit further down the page)
By way of inspiration here’s a music video from youtube that has ‘gone viral’ with almost 44 million plays since the beginning of January. However apart from the music why not take a look at the lighting. There’s the obvious ceiling light in the centre of the frame, but my guess is that there is is a single table lamp low down maybe even on the floor infront of the girl or slightly more toward the middle. It’s also quite close as it falls off quite a bit by the time it reaches the right side of the frame and the guy with the hat. Look at the shadows on the wall behind them all, they are clearly above the height of the musicians so the light must be below them. In general when trying to work out where lights are the shadows are often the best guide. Of course for some portraits it’s possible to see the light being used in the models eye.
It could be fun to do the CD/album cover with an emphasis on silhouettes – perhaps lighting from behind as large, soft light or as rim lighting and then having the option to include ‘dabs’ of light from the front/sides.
most families with kids will have at some time looked into a professional studio session … most run screaming when told the costs involved to get a picture on the wall …. My first proposal would be to offer 2 or 3 family slots on week 4 of the studio nights ….. rotating the families through some different sets with props possibly utilized.
Once images have been tweaked and uploaded to a central point …. viewing (on-line) would be offered to the families involved …. for the cost of media (of there choice)and ink those families would be invited to select 1 or 3 images and mounting would be left up to the applicable families
2) An oily evening “Bikini and Bathers” shoot. Beach-balls, towels with fit, oiled bodies (the boys) …. and some Bikini clad models too.

Really like that idea Allan it makes an awful lot of sense (option 1 that is!!), would be quite happy to do that, could be fun as well!
Well that back fired !!! … had my oil and Bikini all picked out @//(-/-)\\@

Well, I like the idea of the album cover shoot (strangely?!)
It will enable us to try out loads of different lighting techniques depending on the music type/mood that we want to go for. I just think that family shoots are going to be far more restricted in acceptable lighting etc. where we could “go to town” with a music shoot.
Anyone can bring musical props, I for one can get hold of a guitar, tamborine and african drum (!) and shoot for their preferred type of music instead of being restricted by a tight brief (no jokes intended). I know the idea of a brief is to focus the resulting image, but we are also learning, so to have that freedom with the set-up of the lighting would be good – for me anyways!
It’s definately there Brian, coming througn in the front row just fine!!
