Thinking Like a Judge
With Kathy Chantler and Julia Cleaver
Attendees forty.
Our recent club meeting featured Kathy Chantler and Julia Cleaver presenting a workshop on ‘Thinking like a Judge’.
Kathy began by giving the members a question-and-answer session on what we thought Judges looked for in an image, and how to break down an assessment of a photograph. We looked at composition, focal points, story, creativity, emotion, depth of field and sharpness. It was an interesting process, breaking it into overall areas such as Impact, Technical Expertise, Artistic Merit, and Originality, Powerful Composition.
We learned what we gained points for and lost them for.
We were then asked to get into groups around five tables and were asked to assess the images put before us from one of the perspectives above. This was a very thought-provoking exercise, and everyone joined in readily giving their opinions. These were then fed back to the audience. Many people came up with similar critiques. Kathy was able to follow some of our ideas by cropping Images and turning to mono to try our ideas for improvement out.
The question that remains is can we do it with our own images? We will see at the next competition.
Thank you to both Kathy and Julia for an informative fun evening.
Thanks to Julia for the photos.
