This evening was an opportunity for members to submit up to two images for an informal critique from one of our club’s CACC qualified judges; Kathy Chantler. Kathy has a wealth of experience judging for camera clubs and used her skills to review the images presented. Twenty one members had each submitted two images for critique making a total of 42 images.
There were a typically large range of subjects including action, street, portraits, creative, architecture and wildlife. Some images were more “ready for competition” while others offered opportunities for Kathy to provide guidance on how to improve an image.
Some common themes that Kathy covered included:-
- having a clear and identifiable subject to the photo
- cropping the image to focus attention on the intended subject
- checking for, and cleaning up bright distractions around the edge of the frame
- ensuring the image is level
- trying black and white to convey texture and detail
These critique evenings are anonymous, the title of the image is the only element mentioned when the photo is displayed. In some cases the title became vitally important to guide attention on the authors intended subject of the photo.
For some of our new members it was their first time to see their images large on the clubs screen, and in itself the large size does make smaller distractions much more apparent than you’d see while editing on a smaller screen. A further critique evening is planned for the start of January 2027.
We were able to record the critique evening, and have created a video that members can watch to learn from Kathy’s critique.
